Joel S. Sonnenberg is an associate in the firm’s Intellectual Property Area. He focuses primarily on researching and counseling clients on patent, trademark, trade secret and copyright matters. Joel’s experience and background, however, provides him with the unique ability to issue spot and identify opportunities that may arise in a variety of technical fields, even outside of his particular areas of practice. He provides added benefit to clients by seeking and managing the appropriate expertise from within the firm to address these issues and capitalize on the opportunities. In his areas of practice, Joel advises clients on establishing and managing their intellectual property portfolios and on the current state of the law with regard to litigation and intellectual property issues. This includes assisting clients with developing their ideas and identifying the best ways to protect those ideas. Prior to becoming an attorney, Joel was a registered U.S. Patent Agent (Registration no. 70,766). In particular, Joel has extensive experience assisting clients with navigating the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) and has prepared numerous patent applications and responses to office actions.
Joel’s background is what makes him exceptionally good at his job. His experience strikes an intriguing balance between law and technical fields. Prior to joining Hahn Loeser, Joel was a Project Engineer and a Project Manager for one of the nation’s Top 400 Contractors, as ranked by Engineering News-Record (ENR), and one of the top U.S. healthcare contractors, as ranked by Modern Healthcare Magazine. In this capacity, Joel gained extensive experience working with designers, engineers and contractors and managing the finer details of complex building projects, including mechanical, electrical, civil and structural systems. He understands green design practices and is LEED® AP credentialed. Joel also worked as a skilled laborer, carpenter and mechanic. He brings that broad-based skill set to his law practice, providing clients with approachable and uniquely qualified legal counsel.
