What is Naturalization?

Naturalization is the process in which foreign citizens can obtain U.S. citizenship. Naturalization, however, has many required steps that must be completed in a specific manner in order to be considered for citizenship. Requirements can include, but are not limited to:

• Permanent U.S. residency for at least five years
• Permanent resident status with a green card or be married to a U.S. citizen for at least 3 years
• Have qualifying service in the U.S. Armed Forces
• Be at least 18 years old
• Be of good moral standing and character

Qualify for Citizenship

In order to qualify for citizenship in the United States, you must be able to prove that you fulfill the requirements for naturalization mentioned above. Providing that you meet any of the above qualifications, you can then pursue citizenship. In addition to the requirements for naturalization, citizenship applicants are required to:

• Complete and submit Form N-400, Application for Naturalization
• Complete an immigration interview once form is filed and approved
• Pass a background check
• Display a basic understanding of English by passing an oral, reading, and written exam
• Display a basic understanding of Civics by passing an exam
• Agree to support, uphold, and abide by the U.S. Constitution
• Take an Oath of Allegiance to the U.S.
