Hahn Loeser Attorney Jayme Levin-Muriel and TotalLink to Community founding parent Joan Martin presented “Who Helps Me Decide? – Tools for Independence & Support,” on November 19. Jayme and Joan provided families with knowledge to make informed decisions about appropriate support structures for loved ones. Attendees were able to develop a deeper understanding of their options and tools to navigate the path toward greater independence and self-determination.
The workshop was designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families or support people to explore important tools for fostering independence while ensuring the necessary support systems are in place. The interactive class navigated key topics such as guardianship, power of attorney, and supported decision-making. Participants:
- Learned about Guardianship: Understanding what guardianship means, how it impacts decision-making, and when it might be appropriate.
- Explored Power of Attorney: Gaining insight into the role of a power of attorney, how it differs from guardianship, and how it can be a helpful tool for individuals seeking independence while securing needed support.
- Became Informed on Supported Decision-Making: Discovering how supported decision-making works, offering a less restrictive alternative to guardianship while empowering individuals with IDD to make their own informed choices.
