Michigan Municipal Law Expands Funding Possibilities for Public Projects

A Michigan law effective as of December 14, 2010 has expanded funding possibilities for municipalities searching for a way to pay for public transportation and infrastructure projects. MCL 125.1871 et seq., known as the Private Investment Infrastructure Funding Act, allows cities, villages and townships to form negotiating partnerships with other Michigan public entities to develop public facilities, including roads, parks, utility lines and commuter rail projects, and authorizes the partnerships to finance the public projects, in part, by creating special assessment districts or soliciting funding from the private sector.
