Trained as a labor and employment lawyer, Don Slowik concentrates on complex and challenging employment-based immigration filings for U.S. and international companies and foreign entrepreneurs and investors. With more than 35 years of experience, Don has a deep understanding of employer needs and HR considerations, and skills in statutory interpretation (having served as legal counsel in the Ohio legislature). He has the experience and ability to litigate immigration cases in federal district court when necessary.
Don has developed an in-depth understanding of immigration laws and takes a creative, problem-solving approach to serving the needs of clients, whether it is to hire a recently graduated foreign student in the United States or to transfer critical personnel from abroad. He regularly guides business clients, including Fortune 500 companies as well as small businesses, through the process of obtaining temporary visas and permanent immigration status for foreign nationals whom they seek to employ. He counsels employers on E-Verify and I-9 compliance and defends them during DOL or DHS investigations, including investigations of immigration-related discrimination claims.
Don devotes substantial time to sharing his expertise with colleagues and other professionals. He has written on the topic of immigration law for employment attorneys in Labor and Employment News published by the Ohio State Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section. He contributed a chapter about best practices of an immigration lawyer to the Thomson Reuters/Aspatore Law Books series. He has also published immigration-related pieces in Business Finance Magazine, Columbus Business First and the Columbus Bar Association’s Bar Briefs magazine, among others.
Don has presented on the topic of alternatives to H-1B visas at the Annual Fall Conference of the Ohio Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and has spoken on immigration topics at seminars and meetings held by the Ohio State Bar Association, the Columbus Bar Association, the Employers Research Association, the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio and the Ohio Association of Realtors.
