Biography

Alan S. Kopit focuses his practice in the areas of Commercial Litigation; Construction Law; Creditors' Rights, Reorganization and Bankruptcy; and Government Relations (a practice he co-chairs). He is a member of the firm’s board of directors, and served as the firm's Cleveland Office Managing Partner from 2003-2013.

Alan served as president of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association for the 1996-97 term. He also was appointed by then-Cleveland Mayor Michael White to serve as co-vice chair of the Cleveland Bicentennial Commission. Alan was the consumer law contributor to the Today show (NBC) for six years. In 1987, he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve as a White House Fellow, assigned as the Special Assistant to Secretaries of Defense Caspar Weinberger and Frank Carlucci. Alan currently serves as president of the White House Fellows Foundation and Association, the alumni arm of the President's Commission on White House Fellowships. He is also on the boards of College Now Greater Cleveland, the Entrepreneurial Preparatory School of Cleveland, and the Village Preparatory School of Cleveland. Alan chairs the American Bar Association Fund for Justice and Education, providing more than $45 million to the public service programming of the ABA.

Alan is listed in the 2007-15 editions of The Best Lawyers in America in the categories of Bankruptcy & Creditor-Debtor Rights Law, Bankruptcy, Litigation - Securities and Commercial Litigation. Alan was listed as "Lawyer of the Year" in Cleveland, OH in the category of Litigation - Securities in the 2015 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. He is also listed in the 2004-14 editions of Ohio Super Lawyers.
